On average, the lifespan of a hearing aid is 4 – 6 years. Dust, ear wax, moisture and other debris can affect hearing aids negatively. In order to ensure your hearing aid performs well for years to come, here are seven easy steps you can take:
- Wipe down your hearing aid with either a soft, dry cloth or a brush daily.
- Do not use a soaking wet cloth or unapproved solutions to clean your hearing aid. A dry cloth or a brush is typically all the tools you need.
- When cleaning your hearing aid or changing a battery, be sure to work over a soft surface in case you drop the battery or the hearing aid itself.
- If your hearing aid has wax guards, they need to be changed approximately every month.
- If earwax is a continuous issue for you, contact your audiologist. You may need to have your ears professionally cleaned.
- If you use hair spray, do so before putting on your hearing aids.
- Once a year, bring your hearing aid to your audiologist for a clean and check. During this time, parts will be thoroughly cleaned or even replaced to make sure you are hearing your very best.
And that’s it! By following these simple steps, you can help extend the life of your hearing aids. If you have any questions regarding the upkeep of your hearing aids, please do not hesitate to ask!
